The pattern we see every year
There is a rhythm to it, and it repeats like clockwork. In winter: “Business is slow right now, call me in the spring.” In spring: “Things are picking up, but I am too busy to deal with this.” By summer: “I needed that money two months ago.”
The owner in that story knew the need was coming. What went wrong was not the decision; it was the timing. By the time the paperwork got done, the contracts had been bid, the truck had been sold and the good subcontractors were booked.
What waiting actually costs
Chase funding in the middle of your busy season and three things happen.
- You are too busy for the paperwork. The same pace that makes the season profitable makes it impossible to stop and pull bank statements. “I will send them tonight” turns into weeks.
- You miss the window. The equipment you needed sells to someone else. The commercial contract goes to the bidder who had the materials budget. The lease on the second location goes to whoever had capital ready.
- You end up scrambling, and scrambling is expensive. Funding arranged in a hurry is arranged on worse terms than funding arranged with time, because you have no room to compare or to say no.
What the businesses that keep growing do instead
They arrange funding in the off-season and put it to work in the busy one. A contractor who knows a large job is coming lines the money up before the start date. A trucking company that slows in winter and picks up in summer finances the next truck while it is quiet, so it is on the road the week demand returns.
With the money already in place, the busy season looks different:
- Materials bought early, in bulk, without rush shipping.
- The best subcontractors hired before they are booked elsewhere.
- The job started on day one, not after a funding delay.
- Room to say yes to the next project, because cash flow is not the bottleneck.
A slow season is a planning season
It sounds backwards, but the quiet months are the right time to look at this. You have time to gather statements and get them organised, to see what the options actually are without pressure, and to check eligibility so you know what is realistic before you need it. Then, when the season turns, the decision is already made and the money is already there.
